If you design or specify components for a living, PTFE has probably been on your bill of materials for years. The EU’s proposed PFAS restriction has changed that. PTFE is a fluoropolymer, and fluoropolymers sit inside the group of substances the restriction targets, so engineers and procurement teams are already rethinking parts they used to take for granted. 

The updated 2025 proposal introduced specific derogations for some fluoropolymer uses, but it stopped well short of the blanket exemption industry had asked for, so PTFE remains squarely in scope for most general engineering applications.

Realistically, that puts first bans closer to 2028 or 2029, with longer derogations running into the late 2030s for sectors where alternatives are still being developed.

The UK isn’t bound by EU REACH any more, but most manufacturers here sell into Europe or sit in European supply chains. If your customer can’t use a PTFE part, neither can you. It’s also worth noting that UK REACH is moving on PFAS in its own right. HSE opened a consultation on PFAS in firefighting foams in August 2025, and Defra’s PFAS Plan signals more sector-specific restrictions to come. Which Applications Feel It First

PTFE earns its place through low friction, chemical inertness and a wide temperature range. That’s exactly why it ends up in seals, bearings, bushes, valve seats, gaskets and electrical insulation.
